This film offers an overall introduction of the famous Buddhist site of Dunhuang. It was shot and produced over a period of three years on site. It has a visual identity as unique as its content. It was indeed the first time the Dunhuang Research Institute allowed a media organization to film into more than 60 sacred caves, including several caves not opened to tourists or other media. Each of the ten episodes tells the story of a specific character. Put together, those destinies highlight, in a lively way, a millennium of history.
